Op art (late 20th century) in painting plays on the possibilities offered by optics and perception. Op art is an intellectually oriented and systematic style, very scientific in its applications. Based on perceptual tricks, the misleading images in these paintings capture the curiosity and pull the viewer into a conscious exploration of what the optical illusion does and why it does it.
