A recognizable type of film which depends on certain established conventions and expectations. Common American genres are the Western, the Gangster Film, the Horror Film, the Musical, the Detective Film, and so on. Examples of generic conventions would be the Gangster Film's urban setting, fast cars, drinking, moll, pistols, machine guns, flashy clothes.
